Woman Killed by Alleged Drunk Driver While Getting Mail

A Newton County woman was killed while attempting to retrieve her mail from the box located beside the road along the edge of her property. She was struck by an allegedly drunk driver on Monday, June 11.

The fatal accident occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. The woman, 48, had just removed her mail from the box when a 57-year-old Covington woman driving a Chevy Trailblazer approached on Hwy. 212.

The driver failed to maintain her lane and swerved off the road. As her vehicle went into a skid, it slammed into the homeowner.

The victim was left trapped under the Trailblazer and was extricated by first responders. She died at the scene.

The driver had her two grandchildren as passengers in her vehicle when the fatality occurred. Neither were injured in the accident. She faces charges of failing to maintain her lane, DUI, child endangerment and first-degree vehicular homicide.

Certainly, few people would expect to meet their demise simply by walking down the drive to the mailbox. Unfortunately, when people choose to drink and then drive, nobody is safe from risk.
